PROBLEM
Being part of the RISD community, I found that many resources in the RISD Museum are not fully made available to the community. Additionally, the RISD community lacks resources that bring them together outside of class.
CHALLENGE
- Turn RISD Museum into a participatory museum
- Encourage visitors to engage and contribute to the RISD museum
- Make visitors feel more welcomed in the community built by the museum
SOLUTION
Design an app that provides people a welcomed and engaging experience in the RISD Museum.

INTERVIEW WITH PURPOSES
I interviewed four students and three staff from RISD Museums to get insights from different stakeholders.
Notes used to analyze insights from interviews
INSIGHTS FROM THE INTERVIEW
Students often miss events held by RISD Museum because they could not get the information easily.
Time constraint is the main reason that students don’t go to the museum often.
Students really want to make friends who have the same interests as them in the museum.
The reason why exhibitions are static for students is that museums often make plans 5-6 years ahead.
OBSERVATIONAL RESEARCH
I found that most people at the museum do not talk to people around them, even people who come with them, which makes the atmosphere serious and cold. Also, people look at their phones to search the background information about artwork frequently because they cannot understand the explanations on the labels next to each artwork.
How might we create a digital experience to increase students' participation and engagement in the RISD Museum?
